This master class allows students to create two products in a short time, boots with laces and a matching handbag.

Learning outcomes

A. Making Felted Boots. Students will learn:● how to take correct measurements of their feet & how to build the template;● how to make bigger template for shrinkage of wool;● about different stages of the felting process (layout wool, the best way to work with short fibres, using sander, process of rolling, shrinkage of the product, building your felt piece in to 3D piece, details how to work with mood (shoe last.);● how to make boots with laces, which is a more complex model, and based on this knowledge, you will be able to make other models of shoes;● making their own heel box;● about installation of heel box, inner soles, detailed assembly of the upper part of the boots;● process of soles installation;● preparing a boot for installing eyelets.
B. Making Felted Matching Bag. Students will learn:● how to design their bag (the size, length of the handles, adding pockets, décor)● how to create template and making template bigger for the wool shrinkage.● working with wool;● how to create a 3D object from a flat project; ● how to achieve a symmetrical product, the formation of the side walls as well as the bottom of the bag; ● non-standard solution for processing bag handles to the desired length.Depending on the chosen decor, you will learn the technique of shibori, woolen watercolour, creating 3D elements.

Tentative program of the workshop

  • Day 1. Boots: template

    • taking measurements;• constructing template including wool shrinkage, making felted samples for shrinkage calculation and to determine the thickness of the felt for boots in making;• making a sketch;• making the template for the bag.

  • Day 2. Boots: layout

    • prepare layout on a resist;• wet the layout and start to felt on the resist by rolling;• working on the boot's shape using the shoe last;• correction of possible mistakes. 

  • Day 3. Boots & bag

    Boots: ● making heel box for boots;● remove shoe last from boots;Bag: ● prepare layout of wool;● start to felt with the resist inside;● work on shape;● continue rolling.

  • Day 4. Boots & bag

    Bags: ● giving the final shape to the bag;Boots: ● installing the heel box to the shoes;● installing the insoles in the shoes;● preparing the boots to put on the soles; ● attaching soles to the shoe.

  • Day 5. Boots & bag

    Bag:●  Installing accessories on the bag;● lining the bag. Boots: ● installing Accessories on boots (eyelet, zipper);● stitch soles on boots.
